A group of city watch came into the square from the opposite side. “Damn it,” said Orren, “you’ll have to make yourself scarce. I’ll distract them while you slip away.”

“Don’t do anything foolish.”

The big man snorted. “I’m only going to talk to them. We don’t all have your flair for the dramatic. Oh, I’ve an idea.”

“What’s that?” Belasko was trying to keep Orren between himself and the approaching city watch.

“Lord Hibberth, do you remember him?”

“Yes, although I haven’t seen him in a while — not since that thing with the jugglers at the Countess D’aviland’s party.”

“He’s a good man, and a friend of mine to boot. Go to him. He’ll give you a bed for the night at least. He owes me a favour.” Orren turned towards the city watch and spread his arms wide. “Gentlemen! Isn’t it a glorious day? Just when we are all low with grief, Aronos above sends us a day like this! Now, you look like men about some business. How can I assist you?”

Orren’s voice faded as Belasko withdrew into the shadows at the edge of the square. By keeping the bigger man between himself and the watch, he was able to move without being noticed. He edged into a road that led away from the square and picked up the pace.
